Detoxing- What’s It All About?
The thought behind detoxing or cleansing is to help the body rid itself of toxins from crappy food, alcohol and even the environment. Each year people are spending millions of dollars on quick fix cleanses and detox programs consisting of shakes, juices and fasts hoping to undo all the damage they have been causing on their body.
The truth is you already have a few internal processes dedicated to ridding you of excess toxins every day! Your liver functions to prevent pathogens into the blood and detoxify your body. The kidneys sift through blood filters out extra water, urea and other wastes which exit the body through urine.
So Why Detox?
There’s no need to spend money of detox programs or cleanses that will leave you fasting for days or only drinking juice or shakes, they aren’t necessary or even proven to be beneficial. It is, however, a good idea to cut down on certain foods that can be over taxing for the body to process; to reset your brain and re-focus on nourishing yourself and not giving in to social situations or taste. In this case, a detox full of fresh, clean, whole foods will not only give your internal detox system a little break but it’s a great way to get your mind focused back to making healthy choices and setting you up for a healthy, happy year!
What to look for:
Most of the detox programs out there require you to buy their products, whether its juice, pre-made shakes or supplements, these are usually expensive and don’t taste great. IF you decide you want to do the same cleanse again, you’re shelling out more money.
You should look for detoxes that are more about eating whole, real foods; that don’t require fasts that can actually do more harm than good and one that you can and would want to repeat without the expense.
When to Detox?
A lot of people like to detox seasonally which can be a great idea if you are not already eating minimally processed foods and refined sugars and grains. If you already eat a clean diet then once or twice a year is enough. A detox at the beginning of the year is a great way to reset the body and mind and start the new year off right. Another great time to detox is around the end of summer after vacations. There’s always going to be a reason why you can’t do a detox. It requires giving up certain foods and drinks we’ve become accustomed to. There’s no such thing as the perfect time to detox, you just have to make the decision that it’s worth it more than you’re afraid of it. Realize that you have the strength to give up your normal social life and habits to reset your body and mind and hopefully you will learn a few things about making healthy decisions effortlessly.
What to expect?
The first time you take on a whole, real foods detox can be difficult. Your body goes through withdrawal symptoms making you crave those foods you are trying to detox from while also testing your willpower. It also gives you a lot of strength. You have many moments where you feel proud of the strides you’re taking and healthy choices you’re making. Sure, some people fall off but that usually brings with it a learning opportunity to discover their triggers and also realize certain food addictions. You end up gaining so much more than you give up making it completely worth it in the end. The more you do the detox, the more willpower you gain, the more recipes and lessons learned follow you throughout the year, turning unhealthy eating patterns into healthy character traits.
